Mary - Re-homed

Bob and I brought Mary home on 17th November 2007. She settled in really quickly and within a few days had pulled all the stuffing out of a soft dog toy that I bought her!
After about couple of weeks, we gave her her own arm chair that she curled up in to watch the telly and sleep (although it never looked comfy!). She would jump up on and off when either of us came in from work, or came down in the mornings! She is still very excitable! Christmas was a rather overwhelming experience; the wrapping paper was her favourite thing in the whole world and after ripping every piece up and rolling around in it, she was exhausted for the rest of the day!

Although she loved the extra time with us over the Christmas period, winter is not Mary’s favourite season. She hates rain and refuses to go outside without her coat on, we also appear to walk double time for the whole walk, only stopping to sniff under trees that shade her from the rain! She will not walk in puddles or mud and will walk around anything she thinks may be “unclean”! When we return from the walk, she then takes about 20 mins cleaning all the dirt from her white paws (may I say that they remain white most of the time and seems to be quite cross when they are not).

We came to the open day at the kennels in May and Mary had a wonderful time, I did think that she may be a little nervous, taking her back to the kennels, but she was really excitable. She was amazed to see another brindle dog and they just stared at each other for ages!!! We also met Kate – Mary’s old owner, it was great to see her face to face finally and Mary was thrilled to see her again. Kate gave her some lovely gifts, which have to stay on her bed all the time now! Mary has now progressed from the single chair to a 3 seater sofa, I have added a duvet and a cushion and she is in her element and as the sofa is now under the window at home, so she normally either stretches out to sleep and watch telly or sits and looks out of the window!

She loves cuddles and gets upset when I say hello to Bob first when I get in from work! We leave near a large common which is where the rabbits live! We walk around the common every day and she is getting better and better with the rabbits. She is still a little unsure of small dogs, but a slow meet seems to working well at the moment and she is a lot more understanding now of animals that are smaller than her.

She is very vocal and appears to chat to us a lot, by making strange whining noises. One of her favourite things is when I get in from work, I sit on the sofa with her and she sits next to me and puts her head under my chin for cuddles!! She is a huge smiler and is always smiling when she is happy, I love the picture below of her on her sofa smiling!
We went away to Lowestoft at the end of April for a long weekend; we went to the beach every day, which she really enjoyed! She was not keen on the sea and was quite confused by it as it kept moving towards her! Also, the fact that it was wet probably didn’t help!!! It was her 5th birthday on 1st September, which she did not understand, but she had a lovely big chew, a new smart coat and a new duvet for her sofa!

Although we have only had Mary for about 10 months we could not imagine life without her now, especially as she thinks she is human! We are so pleased and thankful that she is now with us and only wish that we had enough room to help some of the others.

Love, Sarah, Bob & Mary
